According to FinCEN's analysis, the last two years have witnessed a marked increase in suspicious activity reports involving deepfake media. Criminals are using generative AI tools to create sophisticated synthetic content — including fake identity documents, photographs, and videos — to bypass financial institutions' security protocols.
The threat isn't limited to static images. Fraudsters are now deploying real-time deepfake technology during video verification checks, representing a new challenge for financial institutions' authentication processes. How the Attacks Work
The modern fraudster's toolkit has evolved beyond simple document forgery. The implementation of sophisticated multi-factor authentication, particularly phishing-resistant variants, provides a crucial foundation. As per the alert, financial institutions must also maintain rigorous due diligence processes for accounts showing suspicious patterns, regularly review and update their authentication protocols, and ensure staff receive ongoing training in recognizing emerging deepfake indicators.
