A Single Social Media Post Can Lead to a Cyberattack

For cybercriminals skilled in open-source intelligence (OSINT) and armed with today's AI capabilities, these seemingly innocuous social shares can provide the precise blueprint needed to breach enterprise defenses.

Much can be gathered from something as innocuous as a standard workstation photo. To an attacker, this isn't just a casual share – it's a reconnaissance goldmine. The operating system's wallpaper can reveal the exact version running on corporate machines, allowing malware to be precisely tailored. Notes or chat windows may expose passwords or internal project names that lend credibility to phishing attempts. Even a glimpse of a security badge can be enough to create convincing forgeries.

This initial intelligence enables highly targeted attacks that are increasingly enhanced by AI. An attacker can use the employee details visible in the post to identify their position, reporting structure, and colleagues. With this context, they can craft deepfake video or audio that mimics known executives or IT staff. Recent data shows a 704% increase in face swap attacks and a 353% increase in emulator-based video injection attacks. GetApp found that 72% of companies reported their senior executives were targeted by cyberattacks in the past 18 months, with 27% of these attacks utilizing deepfakes or generative AI. The financial sector is particularly vulnerable, with deepfake incidents becoming an existential challenge to the sector that may cost US companies $40 billion in fraud losses by 2027, according to the recent FS-ISAC report and Deloitte

The attack chain might unfold when a malicious actor notices a workstation running Windows 10 in the photo's background. Next, they can identify IT support colleagues on LinkedIn and note which collaboration tools the target company utilizes in daily operations. Using AI voice cloning and a spoofed caller ID (achievable for less than $1 per call), malicious actors pose as a known IT colleague, claiming they need to push a critical operating system patch. The request can be made to look legitimate by referencing accurate internal details and providing a flawless voice impersonation. As soon as cybercriminals gain access, they can deploy ransomware specifically crafted for the company’s infrastructure.

Deepfakes Breach Company Defenses

Such attacks are far from theoretical. The anatomy of such a breach was recently demonstrated when threat actors successfully compromised both MGM Resorts and Caesars Entertainment through social engineering, with the latter paying a $15 million ransom. The attackers later revealed their methodology on Telegram: they began by identifying employees on LinkedIn, obtaining phone numbers from data broker sites, and then using these details to convince IT support to reset login credentials. But even without data broker access, a single social media post can provide sufficient intelligence for a sophisticated attack. 

Most concerning is that traditional security measures often fail against hybrid attacks that enhance social engineering with AI-powered impersonation. Email security tools and standard authentication protocols aren't designed to detect a deepfake video conference call or a perfectly cloned voice requesting a password reset.

Given the prominence of social media in digital spaces, cybercriminals will continue to successfully utilize it as a vulnerability to gather intelligence in order to breach company defenses.
