The man fell victim to a hyper-realistic deepfake video of Elon Musk promoting a high-return investment opportunity, which successfully convinced him to invest his savings into a non-existent scheme. 

Romance schemes provide another booming opportunity for fraudsters. Recently, a French woman lost more than $850,000 to a scammer posing as actor Brad Pitt, who used AI-generated images and messages to fabricate a romantic relationship and solicit funds for fictitious cancer treatment. Meanwhile, an organized deepfake crime ring managed to steal $46 million from vulnerable men across Asia by utilizing AI-enabled social engineering tactics.

Now a daily online presence, deepfake-generated celebrity endorsements have eroded consumer trust in online communications, demonstrating how easily scammers can leverage deepfakes and open digital channels to mislead the public. From deepfake ads of Oprah recommending a “manifestation guide” to AI-generated avatars of legendary investors like Warren Buffet promoting fake get-rich schemes, synthetic impersonations are targeting vulnerable consumers daily.
